UN announces “barriers” disability theme, DPWCPD unveils plans

The Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities has circulated the UN’s announcement of its theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December 2012 – “Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all.”

The UN’s announcement stresses that barriers – environmental communication, social, legal and others – contravene the rights of people with disabilities and impede attainment of development goals and objectives. It has thus called on all to commemorate International Day of Persons with Disabilities in 20102 by taking steps to address exclusion by promoting accessibility and removing all types of barriers in society.

The UN provides suggestions on how the day may be observed, including: holding forums, public discussions and information campaigns to find innovative ways to address barriers; showcasing the contributions made by persons with disabilities to the development of communities in which they live; and taking practical action that will help remove barriers and promote public awareness of existing barriers in society.

The DPWCPD has started its preparations for Disability Month. It will be circulating a framework document for Disability Month for consultation and consolidation of the national theme, as well national, provincial and local level themes so that all stakeholders may share in the crafting of the 2012 Disability month.
