The purpose of the policy is to regulate the enjoyment of school sport by all learners, irrespective of their ability, across all schools in an age-appropriate and/or grade-appropriate way, based on the principles of equity and access.
The policy objectives are diverse and include:
- The acceleration of the transformation of society by addressing past imbalances through quality school sport programmes;
- To use school sport to develop functional and vibrant institutions of learning and centres of community life.
- To ensure and increase access to facilities and school sport programmes.
The policy requires each school to have a structured school sport programme and commits the DBE to mobilise resources to ensure the provision of sport infrastructure and equipment for schools.
