The DoBE has committed to works towards the overarching goal of improving the quality of learning and learner achievement in its current Strategic Plan.
It proposes to achieve its goals through four strategic priorities:
- Improving the quality of teaching and learning, with a focus on literacy and numeracy and increasing access to, and performance in, mathematics and science. This will be achieved through, inter alia, increasing access to quality materials and providing competent and professional teachers.
- Using standardised assessments and systematic evaluations to assess if learners are achieving the curriculum outcomes and identify areas needing improvement.
- The universalisation of access to Grade R and the provision of quality Grade R programmes to compensate for socio-economic deprivation and low family literacy.
- Turning around dysfunctional and poorly performing schools by improving accountability and service delivery at district, provincial and national level.
