Health Department expands ARV treatment for under-fives

The Department of Health has, since August 2012, implemented an expanded ARV treatment regime for children under the age of 5 years.

Based on recent findings of a recent study of low levels of early identification of HIV-exposed children resulting in children being missed, and given the fact that WHO clinical staging is not routinely performed on children who test HIV-positive, all HIV-positive children under the age of 5 years will be initiated on ART regardless of their CD4 count and/or WHO Clinical staging. The Department’s circular observes that this should improve health outcomes, child survival and the quality of life of affected children.
