Home Affairs publishes amended draft regulations on birth registration act

The Department of Home Affairs has published proposed draft regulations to the Registration of Births and Deaths Act. They provide for the registration of births by the parents, or if they are deceased, a legal guardian or next of kin within 30 days of birth. It further regulates late registrations of births and provides details of the documents required and the process that must be followed.

The regulations also cover the registration of the birth of a child born out of wedlock and the registration of the birth of an abandoned or orphaned child by a social worker.

The Department has further published draft regulations to the South African Citizenship Act. The regulations cove the registration of births that occurred abroad and the registration of the births f children born of parents who are not permanent residents. The regulations further regulate applications for citizenship by naturalisation, citizenship by marriage and the loss of South African citizenship.
