Crime statistics for 2012 released by SAPS

The South African Police Service has released its 2012 crime statistics. Generally the figures indicate a reduction in the level of crime in South Africa.

Some notable statistics include the following:

  • The number of reported cases of neglect and ill-treatment of children has dropped from 5,568 in 2004/2005 to 2,949 in 2011/12.
  • There has been a 6,5% reduction in the number of contact crimes against children between 2006/7 and 2011/12.
  • There has been a 5,9% reduction in the number of contact crimes against female adult victims.
  • The total number of reported sexual offences declined from 69,117 in 2004/5 to 65,514 in 2011/12.
