High-level violence for women who disclose HIV status

The AIDS Legal Network and its partners have published the report, “Gender Violence and HIV: Perceptions and experiences of violence and other rights abuses against women living with HIV in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape, South Africa”. The report confirms that disclosure by women of their HIV status precipitates and is associated with high levels of violence by their partners, families, friends, communities and even service providers alike.

The study calls for a revision of disclosure policies and practices, as well as the design and implementation of services, in order to reduce the risk of violence and respond to women’s needs.
