National Council on Gender Based Violence gets off the ground

The Council is a multi-sectoral body, including civil society members, which was launched in 2011. It is chaired by the Deputy President of South Africa. It will be responsible for coordinating multi-sectoral responses to GBV.

The meeting of the Council on 30 January was opened by the Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities. She indicated the need for the Council to work closely with SANAC, given the link between GBV and the heightened risk of HIV and AIDS.

Points raised during the Council’s two meetings in 2012 include:

  • The current lack of statistics for GBV against people with disabilities.
  • Lack of access to justice for people with disabilities.
  • The need to include more civil society organisations on the Council.
  • The current 365 days of action against violence against women and children needs updating.

A concept document describing the Council and its powers was developed and was open for comment by Council Members until 15 March 2012.
